It is observed that most children go through a lot of confusion with unclear idea and information from unreliable sources related to gender awareness.. This year we have taken an active step for a session with an experienced subject professional who would support and explain the relevant information in scientific manner to prepare children with the expected changes they would go through. Gender is a social construct that impacts attitudes, roles, responsibilities and behavior patterns of boys and girls, men and women in all societies. Gender awareness is more analytical and critical since it clarifies issues about gender disparities and gender issues. Our education system needs to be gender sensitive and gender friendly. To emphasize that Whitefield Global School has organized an awareness programme on 'Gender Awareness in Early Adolescence' on 12 December 2019 in the school premises for Grades 4 and 5. The programme commenced with the introduction of the guest Dr.Shalu Jain, Consultant Paediatrician & Neonatologist in Femiint Health, Bangalore. Followed by a brief introduction of the topic by Primary Headmistress Ms. Nina Mukhopadhaya, the guest Dr. Shalu Jain enunciated the growth and development of girls and boys in adherence to physical, psychological and environmental factors. She also explained the sequence of puberty, hormonal changes and peculiarities of the genders in early adolescent stage. Further, the guest gave an insight on gender norms, gender attitudes, cognitive and psycho -social development of the children aged 8 to 13 years. The session came to an end with the question and answer segment. We feel that age- appropriate open discussion is very important at this 9-11 year-old period to have a clear and focused mind!! We initiated the process and would request parents to join hands in that.
